Joey Baptiste

Joey Baptiste is a member of Rainy River First Nations, a descendant of Paskonkin, and from the Zhiishiib (Duck) Clan. Joey currently works as a Nursing Coordinator at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoa and has completed the Aboriginal Language Specialist Program at Red River College where he majored in Linguistics. He also serves as the Language Interpreter of the Health Sciences Center. Recently, he also completed and graduated from the Red River College Culinary Arts program. He is a proud member of the Chef's Organization of Winnipeg, Manitoba and a Double-Eagle status member of Amway Global, a home based business organization. Appointed to the Rainy River First Nations Community Fund Trust in December of 2009, he is proud to be serving and supporting his First Nation. He also teaches the Ojibwe language, and does contracts for various organizations with the language. Joey is now a full-time Ojibwe instructor at Maples Collegiate in Winnipeg. He enjoys spending time with elders whom he receives guidance on language revitalization, and enjoys skating, hockey, and reading. With the Trust serving as a mechanism for creating opportunities, he would like to see the number of Anishinaabe language speakers increase and the language preserved with capacities built to support its teaching.
